Bird/Diz: An Erased History of Bebop

Bird/Diz is first and foremost a book published by Bunny Press 2022 (a fonograf editions imprint) and written by Warren C. Longmire. It is a meditation on the development of bebop in the 1940s, of black cultural erasure, and keeping the beat after a lifetime of artistic struggle composed of erasures from biographies of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. It also contains QR code links to and lyric essays after archival footage of luminaries throughout the span of bebop’s development.

As a _mixlit work, Bird/Diz is currently a performance for projection, saxophone, piano and drums. Work is currently being done on a short form documentary around the performance as well as a mixed media accompaniment.
